Using Adobe® Acrobat® Reader
with American Tech Products

American Technical Publishers, Inc. strives for excellence in product quality and usability. Full compatibility with third-party software and ease of use are features incorporated into our products. However, it has been determined through product testing at American Tech that Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ Version 6.0 is not 100% backward compatible with previous versions of Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™. This causes functional problems when using American Tech CD-ROM products.

This information has been communicated to Adobe Systems Incorporated, and their engineers are in the process of developing a solution to correct this situation. We apologize for any inconvenience and we will provide additional information when it is received from Adobe Systems Incorporated.

Buttons not functioning – Error displayed when clicking on a button.

Problem: When clicking a button linked to a PDF file, an error is displayed reading "Error opening [drive letter]/[file name].pdf"

Solution:

Install Adobe® Acrobat® Reader from ATP CD-ROM start screen if software is not currently installed.

If Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6 is installed, uninstall Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6, then install Adobe® Acrobat® Reader from the ATP CD-ROM start screen.

Buttons not functioning – Menu, Home, and Exit buttons only.

Problem: When clicking a Menu, Home, or Exit button in a PDF file, the PDF file closes but leaves the Adobe® Acrobat® Readerapplication open. Manually exiting the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader application allows returning to the CD-ROM Home screen.

Solution: If Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6 is installed, uninstall Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6, then install Adobe® Acrobat® Reader from the ATP CD-ROM start screen.

Buttons not functioning – Newer Dell computers with multiple optical (CD) drives only.

Problem: When clicking a button linked to a PDF file, an error is displayed reading "Error opening [drive letter]/[file name].pdf"

Solution: It has been determined through product testing at American Tech that certain Dell optical drive (CD) drivers influence the operation of Adobe® Acrobat® Reader files. Use the second optical drive (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD) to run the CD-ROM.

Buttons not functioning
– No mouse cursor change or navigation when clicking on a button.

Problem: When moving the mouse cursor over a button, no change in the mouse cursor takes place, or when clicking a button, navigational features do not function.

Solution: If Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6 is installed, uninstall Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 6, then install Adobe® Acrobat® Reader from the ATP CD-ROM start screen.

Media/Video Clips not functioning – Error displayed when clicking on a button.

Problem: When clicking on a Media/Video Clip an error is displayed reading "Cannot Initialize Quicktime. Check your QuickTime and Acrobat MoviePlayer plugin installations."

Solution: If Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 5 is installed, QuickTimemovie player software may need to be installed for the clip to play properly. For the latest version of the QuickTime movie player software from Apple®, click here.

Pop-up error message – Error displayed when clicking on a button.

Problem: When clicking a button on any part of a PDF file, an error is displayed which reads "Cannot save form information"

Solution: If Adobe® Acrobat® Reader Version 7 is installed, this alert box will be displayed when clicking on any button. To prevent this from occurring check the "Don't show again" check box, then the CLOSE button.
